Colin Eugene Thompson, 39, of Groveland Township will be arraigned before Oakland County 6th Circuit Court Judge Phyllis McMillen on Oct. 18 for the alleged first-degree premeditated murder of Michele (Missy) Coakley, 40, also of Groveland Township.
Paul Walton, chief assistant prosecutor for Oakland County said at the request of Michigan State Police detectives, the prosecutor’s office authorized arrest warrants against Thompson. If convicted he faces mandatory life in prison.
Thompson was bound over to circuit court on Oct. 5 by Judge Kelley Kostin of Clarkston’s 52-2 District Court. Thompson remains in Oakland County Jail with no bond.
Walton said Coakley was killed on Friday, Sept. 21 in Groveland Township and that Thompson and Coakley lived together in the 16000 block of Dixie Highway, near Wildwood Drive. Walton said Thompson called 9-1-1 and reported Coakley had attempted suicide. When Michigan State troopers arrived they found Coakley with a ‘zip-tie? around her neck.
‘The investigation by the MSP also reported they were being evicted from their residence that day,? said Walton. ‘Based on the physical evidence collected and the demeanor of the suspect, we issued arrest warrants for Thompson after the MSP detectives? investigation. This is just a very tragic case.?
Walton said alcohol was not a factor in the case, however, Thompson has had three OUIL convictions.
‘Groveland Township is a very quiet community where such crimes are rare,? he added. ‘I’ve been a prosecutor in Oakland County for more than 22 years and only recall maybe one other such crime.?
