The Lake Orion High School varsity hockey team played Jan. 11 against the Berkley Bears, in what looked like a near win, only to come up short.
The Dragons lost an exciting 7-3 battle with the Bears, with all of the Dragons’ scoring coming in the first period. The team was led by junior Carl Krauss, who scored twice for Lake Orion, and freshman Danny Randazzo, who scored once.
The Bears gave the Dragons a scare when two shots nearly made their mark. However, thanks to the outstanding efforts of senior goaltender Jeff Nichols, who made some phenomenal saves in the net, the Dragons entered the second period with a 3-0 lead.
Berkley scored twice in the game, with goals by Travis Paterni and Ryan Scully. Both teams battled hard and continued to play a very physical game. However, by the third period, Berkley had dominated Lake Orion’s defense.
Scully scored his second goal of the game, with teammate Brian Laveirgo scoring twice, and Eric Lehman and Tim Tomkowiak of Berkley each scoring and coming up strong against the Dragons’ physical play.
“I’m very proud of my team,” said assistant Lake Orion coach Jason Larsen. “They came out very aggressive and with a lot of fight, and that’s the way we want to play.”
