In the final week of regular season action, the Lake Orion High School varsity hockey team hosted Waterford Kettering on Feb. 18, in a battle that would determine the outlook for regionals.
The game started off with both teams looking to even out from the last time the two met. But after a strong start by the Dragons, they were down 4-0 in the second period. Lake Orion senior goalie Jeff Nichols replaced freshman Joey Adkisson after Kettering scored its seventh goal. Freshman Danny Randazzo scored off a rebound to make the final score 9-1.
On Feb. 20, the Dragons played against Rochester United and nearly gave the Rochester team a run for their money. Nichols had an outstanding performance, while sophomore Josh Fallon had himself a very feisty game with a goal in the first period.
Junior Brent Chiles also scored unassisted, shorthanded on a breakaway, leaving the Dragons at 2-0 at the end of the first period. Rochester came back with its own strong period, scoring twice in the second and twice more in the third.
The Dragons ended their regular season playing against Oxford in the Wildcats’ Senior Night. Both Dragon goalies played equally and gave stellar performances.
Scoring for the Dragons were junior Carl Krauss, who had two on break-aways, and Fallon.
The Dragons played very well offensively and defensively, but the final score closed at 6-3, going to Oxford.
Lake Orion lost in their first regional game, falling 9-3 to Grand Blanc to end their season with a record of 4-19, a much better record than last year’s 1-18-1 season.
Of all four wins, Adkisson was in the net. Against Grand Blanc, Chiles scored two goals and Krauss had one for the Dragons.
