In ‘tire? straits

By Leah Yanuszeski, Review Intern
Buck Lake doesn’t like math class. Jim Manzo is a math teacher at LOHS. So how did this unlikely pair come to be?
Luckily for Manzo, Lake is good with his hands. When Manzo found his Pontiac Grand Prix with a flat tire after school, two students went out of their way to help: Lake, along with his friend Matt Hansen.
Lake was informed of the teacher’s dilemma from his ceramics teacher. He willingly went outside to assist Manzo with jacking up the car. When Manzo’s jack failed, Lake called over to Hansen, who joined to help. After retrieving an industrial jack from inside the school, the team of three was able to put a new tire on Manzo’s car.
‘I was raised to help people,? said Lake.
Manzo was impressed with the boys? willingness to help someone they didn’t know.
‘If that’s not a definition of being a good samaritan, then I don’t know what is,? he said.
Manzo sold his Grand Prix of ten years soon after the incident. With any luck, his Ford Focus won’t require the helpful hands of Lake and Hansen.
Principal Sophia Lafayette, who later heard of the student’s deed, commented on their willingness to help, without being asked.
‘The two took it upon themselves — we don’t see that as much these days,? Lafayette said.
