The Lake Orion High School junior varsity ice hockey team, in their first year of play, recently won their first conference title and came close to winning in the finals, by a score of 3-2.
Head coached by Bill Golling, the Dragons had three players out with injuries/illness, including defenseman Kevin McLeod, Dan Bannigan and goalie Robert Granett. Lake Orion nearly defeated Milford in a goalie shoot-out to decide the victory.
Jed Cheverier led the team with two goals, while goalie Shawn Tyron played an outstanding game, filling in for Granett.
In the semi-final game, Lake Orion defeated South Lyon, 5-2.
Dragon scorers included: Matt Millman (assisted by Cody Wendell), Trevor Page (assisted by Chad Rainey), Caleb Fallon (assisted by Rich Safran), Safran (assisted by Fallon), and Page (assisted by Josh Kolans).
Tyron held South Lyon at bay with 24 saves. Other Dragons having an outstanding series were: Adam Rouse, Chris Reynolds, Jake Nichols, Joe Safran and Matt Golling.
Coach Golling will be looking at players at the spring league in preparation for the 2005-06 season.
The first tryout date is March 17, 7:30-9 p.m. at the Detroit Skating Club, Rink C.
The second tryout is March 21, 7:20-8:20 p.m., at the Lakeland Ice Arena, Blue rink.
