Knights of Columbus distributes $8,000

The Lake Orion Knights of Columbus recently distributed checks from their Michigan Tootsie Roll drive.
Fr. Thomas R. Carey, Council #4764 Knights of Columbus, Lake Orion, distributed checks totaling $8,000 at a May 26 Family Dinner Night. The money will go to local groups serving the mentally handicapped.
These funds were collected by Knights of Columbus members and their families at various businesses in the Lake Orion and Oxford communities during the annual Tootsie Roll drive on the weekend of Palm Sunday, April 3 through 5.
Knights of Columbus wants to thank the citizens of Oakland County for their donations to make their drive more successful than last year.
The money will be divided between Scamp, NOVA, Oakland Special Olympics, Section XIII Special Olympics and Team Special Education PTA of Lake Orion Schools.
The Knights? Tootsie Roll drive is a statewide effort. About 80 percent of the money raised is given to these local organizations that work with the mentally handicapped.
The remainder goes into a statewide fund for programs on the state level to help mentally handicapped.
The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal catholic organization for men 18 years or older that serves our country, community, church and membership with their families.
Lake Orion’s Knights of Columbus was established in 1959 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and will be celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.
