Goodrich — On Wednesday night the Goodrich Lady Martians Varsity Basketball team improved to 26-0 on the season after holding Warren Regina Saddlelites to just eight points in the first half en route to a 45-26 Regional 16 win at Goodrich.
“Tonight it was all about tough defense,”said Coach Jason Gray, following the Regional title game on Wednesday. “It’s been our calling card and how we’ve been able to win this season. We had good shots all night, a few fell and here we are. Detroit Edison is going to be tough they’re are great team at 20-3.”
“We’re having a great year and are a very confident in what we do,” he said.
Sr. Kayla Hairston 16 points, four rebounds, Fr. Baylor Lauinger 10 points and four rebounds, Jr. Lexi Kosmowski nine points and five rebounds, Jr. Lucy Rafferty seven points and Soph. Tanner Schramm four steals and three assists.
The win left the Lady Martians just one win from a return to the MHSAA State Championship at Michigan State University.
“The girls on the state championship teams back in 2012 and 2013 were very unselfish, and this team fits that bill,” said Gray. “The difference is this team does not have that super, super star player. Rather, provide a very balanced attack on the floor. Tonight was a perfect example, early on Lucy Rafferty was scoring the point, Baylor Lauinger has a good run of four or six in a row, Kayla Hairston has run of eight, Alexis Kosmowski had her threes. It’s hard to focus on one kid.”
“Not that we can’t shoot the ball, but they really love to getting after people defensively that become our calling card. Defense is step one for us.”
