The Lady Wolves held Cranbrook back as they dominated the courts and captured a 6-2 win over their hosts last Wednesday.
“It was very exciting,” said Becky Freeman, head coach for the Clarkston Girls Varsity Tennis team. “They played excellent. It was really inspiring. Even the two losses gave Cranbrook a run for their money. The team played as I expected them to play. It was a really good match. It is getting us ready for the big show in June.”
The singles led the way as each player dominated their court. Katie Brozovich in Singles #1 beat Amanda Simmons 6-0, 6-0; Lexi Baylis, in Singles #2, beat Kendra Sweet 6-3, 6-1; Paige Olsen, in Singles #3, beat Sarah Lipworth 6-1, 3-6, 7-6; and Abbey Hubregson, in Singles #3, beat Alissa Rowens 7-6, 6-3.
In doubles, Dana Olsen and Olivia Dunn beat Megan Simmons and Meg Phyle, 6-2, 6-3, in court one as Monique Zentner and Katie Hubregsen beat Lauren Lanzon and Christina Rouslet, 7-5, 6-1, in court four.
The Lady Wolves were set to play in the Ann Arbor Huron tournament last Saturday but it was cancelled due to weather. They did sneak in one dual match against Port Huron Northern and lost, 5-3.
“There were a couple tie breakers so it was really close,” added Freeman. “They were not themselves. We will see Northern again this week at Holly’s tournament.”
Brozovich and Baylis both won their matches 6-0 and 6-0.
“It was huge,” Freeman said. “They are both hitting excellent right now.”
Last week the girls also took over the court against Rochester Adams with a 9-0 win on April 23.
For singles, Brozovich defeated Halle Hyman, 6-1, 6-2; Baylis beat Maria Seaver, 6-0, 6-2; Paige Olsen beat Victoria Morin, 6-3, 6-2; and Hubregsen beat Kate Cenko, 6-1, 6-0.
For doubles, Dana Olsen and Dunn beat Charlene Couttean and Alex Martin, 6-0, 6-0; Allie Wilson and Amy Wozniak, in court two, beat Cathy Wang andChristine Weng, 6-0, 6-2; MacKenzie Bedor and Jordan Stuart, in court three, beat Kathy Xu andKristin Heim, 6-1, 6-3; Zentner and Hubregsen beat Francessca Tiberio andSami Tessmar, 6-0, 6-0; and Alyssa D’Andrea and Miranda Marshall defeated Ariana Arwady-Emma Hickey, 6-3, 6-4.
The girls played Andover on Tuesday.
“They have a good team,” Freeman added. “They were suppose to be in the Ann Arbor Huron tournament. It would have been nice to see them. We are looking forward to it and I anticipate some wins.”
They head to Lahser on Thursday for their 4 p.m. match.
“Their number one singles does a nice job,” Freeman said. “Andover and Lahswer should both be good matches.”
They finish the week at the Holly Invite on Saturday.
“There are a lot of big teams coming,” said Freeman looking forward to the competition. “They are the same teams we will see at states. We just need to figure out how to beat them.”
The invite has matches at both in Holly and Grand Blanc, beginning at 8 a.m.
