The varsity Ladycats came up empty in their quest for their first Flint Metro League victory last week. Oxford traveled to Lapeer West last Tuesday to take on the Panthers.
The Ladycats were defeated 53-34 in the game. Oxford senior captain Mykala Salquist and sophomore Kelsey Oliver were top scores with seven points. Senior Carrie Schalm and junior Danielle Esman each had five points.
Oxford got into early foul trouble in the game and missed too many easy shots early on.
The Ladycats had six players on the bench each with two fouls before halftime, causing head coach Al Poynter to break from his man to man coverage into a zone defense in an effort to cut down on the fouls. Oxford went into the half down only ten points despite the foul trouble, but would never recover.
‘I think that we have been very competitive for most of our games, we have just had trouble playing well at both ends of the court for extended periods of time, and by the time we do, we have dug a hole for ourselves,? Poynter stated.
On Thursday, Oxford tried their luck on their home court when they hosted the Fenton Tigers.
The Ladycats played well for the first three quarters, outscoring Fenton in the second, and headed into the fourth down only ten points.
Oxford was outscored in the fourth quarter 17-4 and defeated 51-30.
Senior Gena Nelson was high scorer with nine points, while Salquist and senior captain Ashley Seeling finished with five points.
Oxford’s record falls to 3-7 overall, and 0-4 in the FML.
