Unfortunately, the citizens of Oxford have said ‘no? to an increase in the library millage.
These are difficult times for families. There is uncertainty of job security, loss of Social Security income, and the increase of elderly retiring on a fixed income.?
The library’s mission statement is ‘Transforming tomorrow, preserving our past and enriching lives today.?
With this statement, one should understand the needs of the community. Because of the library’s budget crunch, instead of fighting the public, the library should be trying to work with us. ?
Here are three solutions that might keep the library opened.?
1) The library’s computer should have the information of which days that have the least use by the public. If need be, this day could be closed to cut cost.?
2) The library should be open on weekends.? To ensure weekend use, perhaps the library could open one hour later on weekdays or be closed one day a week.?
3.) Opening the library one hour later each day would allow it to be open every day during the school year.?
‘It is unfortunate that the public has to endure Sunday closure and loss of jobs. This is not the way to endear the library to the public.
Following the mission statement, in order to transform the votes of yesterday, you have to enrich the lives of the public today by thinking outside the box and winning the support of the people who pay the library staff’s salary.
