Library kicks off summer reading with superhero ka-pow

Superheroes of all kinds will visit the Orion Township Public Library this summer.
And to kickoff the summer activities, the community and children of all ages are invited to the annual Summer Reading Kickoff on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library, 825 Joslyn.
The program is an opportunity for everyone in the community, from toddlers to seniors, who enjoy reading and other activities and who also want to have some fun and prizes.
The summer event will have a theme of superheroes and
‘It is ideally targeted for kids but it is an opportunity for everyone to continue reading and enjoy some things during the summer,? said library director Karen Knox. The summer event will have a theme of superheroes and Knox said those local heroes who will visit the library this summer include police and firefighters.
On Saturday, there will be numerous free activities, free food and free live entertainment.
There will be activities and things to see for all ages that include activities, food donated by Jet’s Pizza and Buffalo Wild Wings, art activities, and much more.
The robotics club from Lake Orion High School will have remote control things to try. There will be face painting, Henna tattoos and many other activities.
Local business will have demonstrations. LA Dance, Pee Wee Patch, fLipSpot all will be there. Kids can bring their bicycles and get free adjustments to make sure they are in good and safe condition. There also will be other informational materials for health and other things.
Singer Marissa Knowles will be there to entertain children, while RJ Jazz Trio will entertain adults during the event.
Obviously, the best part is that it is free for everyone.
The Friends of the Library use funds they raise throughout the year to help fund the event.
It is a special way to kickoff the summer reading program. The reading program will be divided into groups, from children as young as a year old, to middle school children, to teenagers to adults. Those interested can register any time up until the last day, August 22
The Rubber Ducky Club for ages 0-4 is a free reading incentive program for babies and children younger than elementary school age. It is easy to enroll. Just go to ‘http://orionlibrary.org/summer-reading/ or visit the library and follow the instructions.
It’s easy to win. After reading to the child, bring the sheet back to the library when all ducks are completed to the first level to receive a rubber ducky. When all the ducks are completed to the second level, bring the sheet back to the library to receive bubbles. When all the ducks are completed to the third level, bring the third sheet back to the library to receive a free book and to be entered into a grand prize drawing.
Children ages 5-12 are invited to be part of the ‘Every Hero Has a Story Summer Reading Program.?
All registration and record-keeping for these programs will be done online. Registration begins on Saturday, June 13 at the Summer Reading Kickoff from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library and on our website.
To sign up, click on the ‘Sign Me Up? button. Create a user name and password. Make your password an easy word to remember – like ‘library?!
You may choose to record the number of books read or number of hours read. After 5, 10, and 15 books or 10, 20, and 30 hours you can come to the library to receive a prize. Reading or listening to any book counts as reading time.
Any child who completed all 3 levels in the Every Hero Has a Story Summer Reading Program is eligible for prizes in our Grand Prize Drawing. The drawing will take place on Saturday, August 22 at 11:45, after the Gordon Russ Magic Show. Each child must have completed their levels by August 21. Participants must be present to win a prize.
The teen program is called ‘Heroes vs. villains?
It’s simple for participants to choose a side and see what team can read the most during the 2015 Teen Summer Reading Program. Prizes will be awarded for 15, 30, and 45 hours read or listened to. Log your hours online and write reviews for a chance to be entered into the drawing to win one of three grand prize Visa gift cards ranging from $50 to $100. Once participants read 45 hours, each additional 10 hours will get you one more entry into a grand prize drawing. The team that reads the most average hours at the end of summer will get an extra prize! The more you read, the more chances to win.
The adult program is called ‘Escape the Ordinary? Participants sign up for our Adult Summer Reading Club, then keep track of the books you read or listen to here. Each book you log earns you an entry for weekly prize drawings as well as for the grand prize drawing for a Kindle Fire HD at program’s end.
For an additional challenge for adults, try’Book Bingo. Pick up a card at the Adult Reference desk or print one from our website. Each bingo adds your name to a drawing for a gift basket.
The final prize drawings will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 22.
