Local bands in concert, May 10

North Oakland Concert Band with the Big Chief Chorus sings in concert, 3 p.m., Sunday, May 10, at Lake Orion High School, 495 E. Scripps Road.
The free concert features American and patriotic music. The Big Chief Chorus will open the concert with several quartets and their 45 man chorus singing in the barber shop style.
The performance will include traditional Barbershop, Doo-Wop, Gospel and Patriotic melodies. The Big Chief Chorus is celebrating its 66th year and entertains monthly throughout north Oakland County.
The concert band opens with James Curnow’s Tempus Fugit, followed by music from the movie Silverado. Tom Blue will then join the NOCB as the narrator of Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait.
The Big Chief Chorus will join the NOCB for an American Armed Forces Salute to recognize those who have service in all branches of the US military.
The concert band, conducted by Annette Kline, has provided the local area with free concerts for 30 years. The band members represent a diverse cross section of citizens from the area, including many music professionals.
Although rehearsals and most concerts are held in Lake Orion, the group includes musicians from all over Oakland, Macomb and Genesee counties.
The communities with the greatest representation in the band are Clarkston, Lake Orion, Oxford, and Rochester.
The band performs several concerts each season, featuring a wide variety of music genres including classical, jazz, and pops. The group is financially self-supporting, relying primarily on member dues and donations from patrons to cover the cost associated with running the organization.
