All streaks must end, and on Wednesday night, Lapeer West ended the Wildcats four game winning streak with a 2-1 overtime victory.
After a scoreless first period, Lapeer West’s Dan Delvecchio broke the ice and scored an unassisted goal, but the Wildcat’s Matt Reid tied the game at one on the power play later in the second, with assists coming from Senior’s Elliot Wicker and Matt Zaun.
The game winning goal came from Lapeer West’s Jeremy Cugliari, with assists coming from Forward Jeremy Podgorski and Defensemen Brandon Lewis.
Just like the previous game, the team’s energy did not meet Coach Hague’s expectations. But Oxford Goalie Corey Hrischuk kept them in the game, stopping all but one shot before giving up the overtime goal.
He stopped 33 of 35 shots for the game.
Oxford’s energy finally picked up in the third, but they could not find the back of the net.
‘We were a little sluggish in the first and second period and didn’t really start playing until the third. We had solid goaltending which gave us an opportunity to win down the stretch,? Hague said. ‘I was proud of our team to bounce back in the third’Both teams had opportunities in the third. It was a competitive game and that is the way our league is every night.?
Coach Hague expects close games in the third period because of the amount of parity in the league this year.
The Wildcats fall to 4-3 in the Flint Metro League play.
