Brandon Township – Once again, the township said construction of the long awaited safety path should begin within the year.
‘I’d like to see dirt turned while we are still on the board,? said Ron Lapp, Brandon Township supervisor.
The safety path is intended for student pedestrian traffic. The trail would eventually connect the Brandon High School, Belle Ann Elementary, H.T. Burt and Harvey-Swanson Elementary schools, east of M-15.
The total cost to complete the path would be more than $225,000, but it will be built at no additional cost to the taxpayers, according to the township supervisor.
The launching of the safety path idea was the first project undertaken by the current board, more than two years ago.
After months of planning, the board finally awarded an $183,294 contract to Warren Contractors and Developers of Detroit, in September 2002. When the contract was awarded the contractors increased the construction quote so the township denied the contract.
April 7, unanimous vote by the board awarded the new contract to Edward R. White of Berkley, Mich. to begin the M-15 Safety Path
