MADD walk is Saturday at Canterbury

The Mothers Against Drunk Driving Strides for Change Walk will be held for the second year in a row at Olde World Canterbury Village in Orion Township on Saturday, Sept. 30.
The opening ceremony will be held at 9 a.m., and will be attended by the MADD’s first dad, Glynn Birch. Birch will speak at the ceremony, and also lead the 5K walk.
Birch became associated with MADD when a drunk driver hit and killed his 21-month-old son instantly, 17 years ago. In 2005, Birch became MADD’s first male president.
The walk will follow the opening ceremony, at 9:20 a.m. Both individual walkers and teams have collected donations and helped rally support for MADD’s mission to stop drunk driving, support victims and prevent underage drinking.
Anyone can become a virtual walker, or make a charitable donation, by logging onto www.stridesforchange.org.
The event will also feature a ‘Village within Canterbury Village,? including entertainment and activities. The Candy Band will play from 8:30-9 a.m., followed by the LOHS cheerleaders and Fun Addicts Dixieland Band, from 10-11 a.m.
A Health and Safety Area will feature free massages from Clarkston Institute of Massage Therapy, the Lake Orion Police Department providing free gunlocks and ID kits, and State Farm’s 911 simulator.
A Kids? Zone will include inflatables, games, face painting, pumpkin decorating, and free carousel rides, as well as free Michigan Child ID Program (MICHIP) kits.
There will also be a Pet Area, including an obstacle course for dogs, obedience demos, and free doggie goodie bags.
A Survivor Area will allow participants to stop and sign a Tribute Memorial Banner in honor or memory of those involved in a drunk driving crash, free Walk in Honor of/Memory stickers, and MADD programs and services information.
