The Lake Orion High School Dragon Marching Band is making it third straight appearance at the Michigan Competing Band Association state finals on Nov. 1. The band qualified by finishing in first place at the Durand Invitational on Oct. 25.
Performing selections from Igor Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite,” the Dragon Marching Band received best marching, music and general effect captions at Durand.
Under the direction of Michael Steele, the band worked hard to reach state finals by participating in a rigorous and highly successful competitive season.
Beginning with a strong third place finish at the Novi Invitational in early September, band members continued their march to the Silverdome by capturing first place at Chippewa Valley, where they also earned the best music, marching and general effect finish.
Their performance at Westland John Glenn garnered them a second place finish, with less than one point separating them from the first place recipient. They were given the best music caption.
Competing for the sixth time in seven years, the Dragon Marching Band is currently sixth entering into the finals.
Seventeen Flight I bands (bands from schools with more than 1,636 students) competed this season . Only the top 10 bands qualified for finals.
MCBA State Final Flight I competition begins at 9:50 a.m. and the Lake Orion’s band takes the field at 10:35 a.m. Admission is $14/adult and $10/student and senior citizen. Admission price includes parking.
