The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department’s Marine Division said the season on Lake Orion has been average so far, although they won’t have final numbers for violations until data is compiled in September.
OCSD Sergeant Dan Toth of the Marine Division said last year nearly 700 patrol hours were logged, with 1,200 stops, 76 violations (tickets) and 327 written warnings.
‘There are always some tragedies,? he said, referring to the diving incident that resulted in paralysis for a Clarkston man on June 27. ‘The violations so far have been average.?
Toth said the division has been working a lot through education and prevention, and offers safety tips and a list of boating classes at www.oaklandsheriff.com.
‘We have the same number of patrols out we’ve had in previous years,? he said. ‘We have early and late patrols going out, due to the size and public access on Lake Orion.
‘We’re out there off and on through the whole week, and especially on the weekends and the holidays,? Toth said.
Toth reminds boaters to pay extra caution on the lake, especially during busy holidays when a lot of people are vying for spots.
‘Take the speed down,? he said.
