Martian cagers fall to Hamady despite Elsworth’s school-record 36

Kortni Elsworth tried her utmost to keep the Goodrich varsity girls basketball team in their Oct. 10 game.
However, despite Elsworth’s school record 36 points, the host Martians dropped a 70-54 contest against Genesee Area Conference foe Hamady. The Hawks improved to 12-1 with the win, while the Martians fell to 10-2. The loss was Goodrich’s first after a nine-game winning streak
The Hawks featured a balanced scoring attack, with four players earning double-figure scoring totals. Shanice Sadler led the charge with 20 points, while Brandie Baker added 15, Tara Johnson 14, and Jonae Coleman 11.
In the first half, the Martians remained within striking distance of the Hawks, trailing 29-26 at halftime. Even after the third quarter, the Martians were still within single digits of the Hawks, 47-42.
However, the Hawks? scoring balance proved to be too much for the Martians to handle down the stretch, and Hamady pulled away for the win.
The Martians earned a decisive victory against a state-ranked Grand Blanc team, defeating the Bobcats 57-39 in a Oct. 5 game at Goodrich.
Grand Blanc headed into the game ranked 10th in Class A, while Goodrich was an honorable mention selection in the Class B rankings.
The Martians controlled the game from the onset, leading 14-5 after the first quarter and 25-12 at halftime. Elsworth led the Martians with 23 points (including four successful three-point shots), seven rebounds and five steals, while Autumn Haggadone added 10 points and six rebounds. Pam Wilson led Grand Blanc with 11 points.
The Martians were the more aggressive teams in getting to the free throw line, shooting 30 times from the charity stripe, as opposed to 11 for Grand Blanc.
