It took three games to get the job done, but the defending Genesee Area Conference Red Division Goodrich volleyball team started their league season on a positive note.
The host Martians defeated Lake Fenton 15-2, 11-15, 15-9 on Jan. 12 to improve their overall mark to 6-7-2.
Tara Garman had 13 kills, six solo blocks, was 9-of-10 serving, was perfect on seven serve receptions and had four digs for the Martians. Marissa Misura had seven kills and four blocks, while Julie Owen was 10-of-11 serving with 15 assists.

‘Betsey Seymour, who was 8-of-8 serving with 14 digs, and was perfect on all six of her serve receptions and had three kills.

‘Denika Brooks, 8/8 serving, 2 aces, 12 digs, 7/8 passing.

The Martians compiled a 2-2-1 record at the Hatchet Invitational. They tied for second in their pool, but lost to Millington on points. They made it to the eight-team quarterfinals, where they lost to Bad Axe 14-25, 18-25 before winding up the day splitting with Millington 21-25, 25-23.
In pool play, the Martians defeated Harbor Beach 25-13, 25-14 and Deckerville 25-23, 25-14, and lost to Bad Axe 12-25, 23-25.
