Martin’s last-second shot lifts Brandon cagers past Lapeer West

Brandon’s boys basketball team made their last home game of the regular season one to remember.
On Senior Night at Brandon March 2, Jason Martin, one of the graduating Blackhawks, hit a shot with four seconds left in the second overtime to give the Blackhawks a 53-52 win against Lapeer East.
After Martin’s shot, the Panthers missed a jumper, then made a steal, but couldn’t get a shot off before the clock expired. With the win, the Blackhawks improved to 7-12 overall and 6-5 in Flint Metro League play.
At the beginning of the game, the Blackhawks were plagued by turnovers, which Lapeer West took advantage of to take a 12-6 lead after the first. The Panthers had a 24-15 lead at halftime.
Heading into the fourth quarter, the Blackhawks trailed West 31-25, but scored 18 points in the fourth, leaving the Blackhawks and Panthers tied at 43 at the end of regulation.
Fittingly, the Blackhawks were anchored by a couple of seniors against the Panthers. Joe Turcsak led all scorers with 16 points, and added 10 rebounds, while Tom Schaefer added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Adam Howard contributed 14 points for the Blackhawks.
Jimmy Collins scored 14 points to lead the Panthers.
The visiting Blackhawks dropped a tough contest on Feb. 27 against Flint Metro League rival Oxford, 44-41.
Turcsak paced the Blackhawks with 11 points, while Howard added 10.
