After being laid off for two weeks the Oxford Boys? varsity hoopsters took a hard 48-40 loss to Stoney Creek on Feb. 14.
Going into halftime with Oxford leading 12-9, Stoney fought back in the third bringing the score close 21-24. The game hovered around four points during most of the fourth quarter. With under a minute left a flagrant (foul) was called on basket made by Stoney’s big man, according to Oxford Coach Paul Marfia, which moved the game up seven points.
‘I was proud of our effort as I have been all season long. We just lost our composure at times down the stretch,? Marfia said. ‘Stoney did a nice job of making plays and we did not. That is sometimes how the ball bounces.?
The Wildcats refocused themselves in Friday’s match-up against Hazel Park. The team came out firing with a 19-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and never lost their energy, which led to a 70-33 victory.
Marfia said he was happy with his team’s effort throughout the entire game and that their execution ‘left something to be desired.?
‘A basketball season is a long journey not a sprint. Our goal is to be better by the end of the season than when we started and I have been happy with the growth. I am happy for the kids and hope they enjoy the win and come ready to work next week in preparation for the districts in three weeks,? he said. ‘It was also nice to see the balance scoring where everyone scored and shared the ball. It is nice to be a part of something bigger than yourself.?
The boys? next game is Fri. Feb. 22 at Groves starting at 7 p.m.
