The new Clarkston Area Lions Club hit the ground running with a successful endeavor to give back to the community this holiday season.’President Brace Case and First Vice President Mike Mercier helped organize the donation of a large quantity of food and presents to an area family in need in the area.
Two weeks before Christmas, the name of a family was given to the Clarkston Lions Club from the Lake Orion Club for a family in the area. The family consisted of a single mother and her three daughters ? ages 3, 7 and 11.
A committee was formed and named ‘Lions Basket of Care? by Chairperson Marsha Mercier.
The charitable project was sponsored completely by the Lions Club’s 31 members, as the newness of the club prevented any community fund-raisers.’An anonymous donation a day later more than tripled the funds collected by club members.
‘We couldn’t have done it without the generous support of Kmart, who donated toys and gave us discounts on clothes and other merchandise,? said Marsha Mercier.
Farmer Jack Supermarkets and Tenuta’s Food Lane also donated gift certificates for food purchases.
The unwrapped items were delivered to the family on Dec. 18.’On Christmas Day, the children received clothes, toys, books and pajamas. A bath set and candles were given to the mother.
‘Marsha Mercier said the basket giving will become a quarterly event.’The Clarkston Lions Club also plans to hold fund-raisers to promote community involvement.
