Brandon Twp.- A new pavilion at the community park is a direct result of the efforts of 15-year-old Zack Zernec.
Zernec, a sophomore at Brandon High School, raised funds for the structure, requested donations, recruited people to build it and helped in the construction itself, all as part of his Eagle Scout project.
A ribbon-cutting for the pavilion was on Sept. 21.
‘I wanted to do something that would benefit the community for generations to come so I can take my grandkids there,? Zernec said. ‘The hardest part of the project was gathering the time to put into it, because I had a busy summer with varsity football and driver’s training.?
Zernec said he put in more than 430 hours of work, between construction and fundraising efforts. He estimates he saved the township $11,000.
‘I feel amazing,? said Zernec, who expects to receive the ranking of Eagle Scout by the end of the year. ‘It was a big relief to be done.?
‘It was well thought and planned out,? said Parks and Recreation Director Fred Waybrant. ‘It’s a very positive structure for the park development. My sincere gratitude and respect goes to him and his family on behalf of the township.?
