After doing hair for 15 years in Arizona, Tracy Kanelopoulous was ready for a change in environment, so she moved to Michigan.
‘I love Michigan,? she said. ‘It’s so beautiful.?
After working a year in Rochester Hills, then four in Waterford, Kanelopoulous decided to open her own hair salon ? Onyx Salon and Spa in Independence Township.
‘I’d been looking quite a few places to find the perfect location for the perfect salon and Clarkston was it,? she said. ‘It was an opportunity that opened up and in this economy, I think it’s good.?
What sets them apart is their hair products and highly qualified staff, she said.
‘We use products that aren’t available in every corner salon,? she said. ‘My staff is constantly educating to stay up with the time and looks. They’re friendly, professional, motivated, and creative.?
Kanelopoulous said they bring in salon educators, as well as send their staff out to Los Angeles, New York and Chicago to keep up with the latest fashions.
‘This is a business where you have to stay educated,? she said. ‘The looks are always changing.?
The salon is located in the Gateway Plaza at the corner of White Lake and Andersonville roads. Salon hours are Tuesday to Thursday, 9a.m.- 9p.m.; Fridays, 9a.m.-7p.m., and Saturdays, 8a.m.-4p.m. Sundays and Mondays are by appointment only.
They will come in early or stay late to accommodate their customers, Kanelopoulous said.
‘In 20 years of doing this I’ve never felt like this was a job,? she said. ‘I just enjoy what I do.?
