The Oxford Virtual Academy (OVA) continues to expand their ‘classroom,? this time to Flint. With a newfound partnership with Kettering University, OVA opened another new learning lab directly on Kettering’s campus on Sept. 4.
‘We formed a partnership with Kettering as a result of their sponsorship of the Oxford Robotics team,? explained Janet Schell, Lead Mentor Teacher.
The Kettering drop-in lab features 35 readily available computers, as well as both wireless and hardwire internet access. Two highly-qualified staff members are available to assist students daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
OVA Director Andrew Hulbert said Kettering took an undesignated room and created a dynamic learning environment, all in an effort to partner to benefit the Flint community.
‘Oxford Community Schools/OVA did not pay for anything for the Kettering lab.? Kettering saw this as an opportunity to partner with Oxford to provide educational opportunities to the students of the area,? Hulbert said. ‘Like OVA, Kettering University is a progressive institution that understands students come first and that in order to meet each student’s needs they must be individually educated.?
‘The opportunities for students in that area are now endless,? he continued. ‘They will be able to take 19 different AP courses, six different foreign language courses? a whole host of new classes to meet their needs.?
Students will have the benefit of a classroom in order to receive in-person instructional and mentor support. In addition to the lab at Kettering, which will service the communities surrounding the Flint area, a homeschool network is currently working with OVA to bring a new homeschool location to the Flint area in the near future.
In addition to the Kettering University Campus, OVA also offers four mobile labs in Oxford, Farmington Hills, Royal Oak, and Ann Arbor; as well as an additional Learning Lab in Oxford.
