The Oxford Wildcats rebounded from a loss to the Fenton Tigers early last week to beat Lapeer East 5-3 on Oct. 2.
Last week, the Wildcats lost a tough game to the Fenton Tigers by a score of 5-2. Sophomore Shane Rhondi tended the net for the first time in the season and allowed 5 goals to the Tigers, most of which came in the first half.
However, the Wildcats put that behind them to defeat the Lapeer East Eagles by a score of 5-3, improving their record to 4-3-3.
In the first half, Lapeer East jumped to an early 2-0 lead; however, sophomore Dave Kourtjian scored less than two minutes later to put Oxford on the board.
Shortly after, Team Captain Jimmy Henry scored on a breakaway pass from Keane Kalso that was barely onside to tie the game at 2-2. Henry scored again at 15:41, also from Keane Kalso, to give the Cats the lead going into the second half. Kalso and Henry are both having stellar seasons for the Wildcats, and are both among the team leaders in scoring.
In the second half, Henry came back again and added his third goal of the game for a hat trick which put Oxford up by two. It was Henry’s third hat trick of the season.
Junior Andy Forte scored a fifth unanswered goal for the Wildcats at 30:39 to give Oxford a commanding 5-2 lead. Good team defense held up for the rest of the gamefor the Wildcats. Lapeer East did score on a late goal, but it wasn’t enough to catch up.
The Wildcats next game will be played on Oct. 9 at Lapeer West, and will be the last road game of the season. The Wildcats will be finishing up the season with three games at home against Durand Area High School, Stoney Creek and Linden.
