Changes to the Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC) program required by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) will cost Orion Township $9,500 in engineer and attorney fees.
The board of trustees approved an expenditure of up to $9,500 in fees in order to have the township engineer and attorney implement the changes to Ordinance 92 and the SESC. Township engineers Orchard, Hiltz and McCliment estimated a cost of $7,250 for their portion.
The MDEQ’s audits the township’s Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control program approximately every five years. Besides changes to the ordinance, changes will also have to be made to township procedures and policies, revisions to paperwork, renewal of certifications and more residential inspections.
If the township does not move forward with the changes, a failing grade will be given by the MDEQ and the program will be turned over to the county.
