Clarkston’s boys swimming team wrapped up their regular season in style Thursday, traveling to Lake Orion and scoring a 106-80 win against the Dragons.
After the Dragons took first in the 200 yard medley relay and the 200 yard freestyle, Clarkston senior Derek LaHousse answered with a victory in the 200 yard individual medley, finishing in a time of 2:16.30. Senior Dan Reed followed that up with a win in the 50 yard freestyle (23.57).
Lake Orion senior Brandon Reiss won the diving competition, but that would be the Dragons’ last event win of the meet.
Junior Nick Riegel won the 100 yard flystroke (1:00.04). Reed earned his second win of the meet in the 100 yard freestyle (51.76), setting a school record in the process. Sophomore Andrew Riegel then captured the 500 yard freestyle (5:28.59).
The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Reed, Derek LaHousse, Nick Riegel and freshman Ryan Kurrle set another school record, winning that event (1:36.20). Senior Troy Quantz set yet another school record, winning the 100 yard backstroke (1:01.25), and senior Nick Curdy took the 100 yard breaststroke (1:10.28).
The 400 yard relay team of Reed, Kurrle, Derek LaHousse and Nick Riegel capped the meet by taking first in that event (3.39.49).
The team lost a tight OAA II meet Tuesday, Feb. 4 to host Rochester 96-89.
After the Falcons won the 200 yard medley relay and the 200 yard freestyle to take an 18-12 lead, Clarkston’s Reed won the 200 yard individual medley (2:24.26), while Derek LaHousse took second (2:21.85), pushing the Wolves in front 24-22.
The Falcons took first place in the 50 yard freestyle to reclaim the lead, but Clarkston answered in the diving event, as Bobby Johnson and Greyson LaHousse took first and second to inch the Wolves in front 39-38.
However, that would be the last time the Wolves led in the meet. Rochester won the 100 yard butterfly to take a 47-46 lead, and the Falcons never looked back.
Clarkston won two other events at the meet, with Curdy winning the 100 yard breaststroke (1:10.68), and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Derek LaHousse, Kurrle, Louis Seaman and Reed winning that event (3:42.20).
With the regular season finished, the Wolves are looking ahead to the OAA championship meet, held Feb. 19-21 at Lake Orion. The preliminary swimming heats will be held Wednesday, Feb. 19, with the preliminary diving heats held the following day and the championship round set for Friday.
“We’re one of the top teams going in, so hopefully, we can come out on top,” Clarkston coach Kenwyn Chock said.
