Richmond’s first-half surge enough to defeat Martians

The Goodrich varsity football team has some kinks to work out from their season opener.
The visiting Martians fell behind early to Richmond in their Aug. 26 contest, and couldn’t catch up, losing to the Blue Devils 21-7.
Goodrich’s lone score came in the third quarter on a 64-yard touchdown run by Paul Burt. Jessica Engler converted the extra point attempt.
Burt led the Martians in rushing with 89 yards on nine carries, while quarterback Tyler Moncrieff completed 12-of-25 passes for 143 yards.
Defensively, the Martians received solid contributions from Bennett Gillam (16 tackles), Chris Tanner (15 tackles, and A.J. Harmon and Joe Leppek (13 tackles each).
Goodrich coach Tom Alward said the Martians will work on correcting their mistakes from the Richmond game.
‘Defensively, we played well enough to win, but offensively, we have to do a better job, and we will,? he said.
After their Sept. 2 game against visiting Bay City John Glenn, the Martians are scheduled to take on new Genesee Area Conference member Durand in a Sept. 9 contest at Durand.
John Glenn is coming off a 9-2 season, which qualified the Bobcats for a state playoff berth. However, the Bobcats lost to St. John’s 35-0 in a first-round contest.
The Martians also tangled with John Glenn in the 2003, with the Bobcats earning a 27-10 win against the Martians.
Durand is looking to get on the winning side of the ledger after going 4-5 in the 2004 campaign. The Railroaders started off their 2005 season with a 34-6 win against Byron in their season opener Aug. 26.
