As part of a grant received in May from the Governor’s Council, Clear Lake Elementary hosted a ‘Safe Walk to School Day? Oct. 12 for more than 200 students and parents.
Clear Lake Principal James Schwarz said raising public awareness about physical fitness and student safety is one of the $3,000 community grant’s primary objectives.
The grant is about much more than the traditional walk to school. It’s about enhancing student physical fitness and teaching good pedestrian skills.
Schwarz said the grant is a partnership with the community ? which includes parents, township officials and law enforcement ? to seek out, analyze, and improve safe routes for students walking to school.
Although it’s only a two-year grant, Schwarz said he hopes the Safe Walk to School Day will become an annual event.
