Two Oxford schools are holding special events Monday, Nov. 10 in honor of Veterans Day and servicemen, both past and present, are encouraged to attend both.
For the sixth year, the middle school’s choirs will put on their Americana Concert at the high school’s Performing Arts Center.
‘They’re excited about getting to know the veterans,? said choir teacher Jan Flynn. ‘They are enthusiastic about contributing to the community.?
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m.
The concert will feature the 160 members of the seventh-grade festival choir and eighth-grade concert choir singing a variety of tunes honoring America and her veterans.
‘I love teaching patriotic music,? Flynn said. ‘I believe students should have a working knowledge of patriotic tunes.?
Joining them for special performances will be Caritas, the premiere ladies ensemble at OHS, and the Four Wheel Drive Quartet, part of the Pontiac-Waterford Big Chief Chorus.
Delivering this year’s keynote speech will be Lake Orion resident Raymond Campbell, a Vietnam veteran and local entrepreneur who’s president and CEO of Mastermind Solutions.
Serving as color guard for the evening will be the Waterford-based Civil Air Patrol Unit #238. Students from Leonard Elementary will serve as official greeters for the Americana Concert.
Besides honoring our nation’s veterans, Flynn said the annual event is also about the schools ‘building a bridge into the community.?
To get warmed up for the Americana Concert, head over to Clear Lake Elementary earlier in the day.
At 2:30 p.m. the school’s fifth-graders are putting on a special program for veterans, soldiers on active duty and their families as part of a service project for social studies.
The 30-minute assembly will feature a power-point presentation, patriotic music, a speech by a veteran and poetry paying tribute to our veterans. Each veteran in attendance will receive a certificate thanking them for their service and an American flag pin.
Following the assembly, refreshments will be served and there will be time for the students and veterans to mingle.
