Schools to open amid construction

Clarkston school officials promise little disruption when classes begin Monday, Aug. 23, but ongoing construction work will affect parents and other motorists at some district buildings.
Bond-funded renovations are on schedule, according to a report at the Monday, Aug. 9 school board meeting, but some accommodations will be necessary.
Crews were working on pavement reconstruction last week at Clarkston Middle School, where a major change in bus routes and parent parking are expected. A main parking lot has been torn up, and some voiced concern about various meetings and events scheduled the week before classes begin.
Roof work at several buildings, meanwhile, was reported close to completion.
Both middle schools are in the midst of renovations and additions to prepare them for their new roles as a grade 6-7 building (Sashabaw) and a grade 8-9 building (Clarkston) beginning in fall 2005.
Board President Karen Foyteck said notices of special instructions will go to parents at each school building.
‘Every building has its own situation,? Foyteck said. ‘We’ll do everything to ensure the safety of our students and the continuity of their school day.?
Trustees and administrators have received regular reports of construction progress and have urged contractors to meet deadlines.
‘It’s a very aggressive timetable,? she said. ‘They’ve done a good job.?
Site work has also begun at the administrative complex on Clarkston Road, where the administration offices will be expanded and a new early childhood center will be added.
The main entrance has been deemed off limits, with public access (including parking) limited to the staff entrance at the side of the building.
Building restrictions led officials to change the twice-monthly board of education meetings beginning in September. Preliminary plans call for the board to meet in the large group instruction room at Clarkston High School.
