The Lake Orion School Board appointed a third-generation-Dragon to take the place of previous trustee Melissa Miller Wednesday night at the board meeting.
Scott Taylor said he had had the interest and desire to sit on the school board for several years, and believes this opportunity will allow him to become more acclimated to the specific processes of the board before he runs for the open seat in the November 2014 election.
He is the director of business development at Lake Orion Heating and Plumbing but is known through the community as a school man. His two daughters, a nine-year-old and six-year-old go to Stadium Drive Elementary, and has been in the PTO that whole time, he said.
Together with his wife, Taylor has been a class sponsor, has helped build floats, hosted proms and been a youth mentor. He was introduced to different school processes all while his wife was a high school teacher in Lapeer.
He previously worked for a tax-based finance company for ten years, so he is very well versed in the tax and budget side of operations, he said.
‘I received an email about the position and said, ‘maybe I’ll try, so I tried and I got it,?? Taylor said.
Taylor has lived in this community for almost 40 years, is a third-generation Dragon, graduated from Lake Orion High School, and lives, plays and works in Lake Orion.
Most recently he participated in a major fundraiser for Stadium Drive Elementary.
‘This experience has led me to want more, to share my knowledge of people, my commitment to my community and school district and the well-being and advancement of your young people,? he wrote in his letter of intention.
Seven candidates were interviewed Thursday, March 6 before the board chose Taylor.
‘The whole time I was sitting there thinking, ‘if I don’t get it I’m glad one of these guys are because everyone was very qualified,?? Taylor said.
Miller resigned from her position as trustee in the beginning of February. It is a partial term and appointed position, thus the vacant seat will be placed on the November 2014 ballot to fill the remainder of the term, which expires on December 31, 2016.
‘I’ve lived here my whole life. I’m very involved in the community, I love it here. It’s always my goal to keep it awesome for my kids. I plan on staying as long as people will have me,? Taylor said.
Miller was secretary of the board and sat on the superintendent evaluation subcommittee and finance subcommittee.
