Signs can help FD, residents in emergency

For a relatively small fee, residents can provide help for fire victims and minimize the risk for themselves.
The Independence Township Fire Department is again promoting the sale of reflective address signs at a cost of $15.
According to Engineer/Paramedic Mike White, the signs are a big help to public safety agencies in an emergency.
‘It takes the guessing game out of the response,? White said.
In addition to helping with emergency response, the signs provide a way for the department’s ‘firemen’s fund? to raise money. White said half of the purchase price goes toward the fund, which the department uses to help those who have been burned out of their homes.
The metal signs are easily attached to a mailbox post or may be mounted separately at roadside on a 4-by-4-inch post. The fire department has brackets available with the signs, and may be able to assist the elderly and handicapped with installation.
Signs are available with a green background with white lettering or a blue background with gold lettering. White said the signs are great for Christmas gifts, but those who wait too long may not receive the normal one- to two-day delivery.
Those interested in purchasing signs may call fire department headquarters at (248) 625-1924 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
