MAEZ, SISTER, MARIA MAEZ (CELSA), of the Blessed Sacrament, O.P. was born on September 16, 1921 in Saguache, Colorado. Sister Maria died on May 7, 2017 at Lourdes Nursing Home, Waterford, Michigan. She was the daughter of Herman and Fidelia (Vigil) Maez. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph J. Abiguel and Paul and one sister Margaret Anaya. She is survived by one brother Herman, Jr. and by her Sisters in Religious Life and many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Sister entered the Dominican Sisters in Grand Rapids, Michigan as a Postulant on September 8, 1941. She received her Religious Formation at Marywood, Grand Rapids, Michigan and became a Novice on August 15, 1942 taking the religious name of Sister Herman Marie. She made her Profession of Vows on August 20, 1943. Sister Maria spent several years teaching in Michigan, Canada and New Mexico. With Sister Marie Dominica Viesnoraitis, O.P. she started a Mission in Chimbote, Peru in 1963. She spent seven years in Peru. After discerning her vocation to the contemplative life, Sister Maria came to the Dominican Monastery of Our Lady Mt. Thabor, Ortonville, Michigan in 1979. While at the Monastery she was on the Council, librarian, archivist. She also translated two books from Spanish to English, Life of Praxedes Fernandez by Father Martin-Maria Olive, O.P. and Witness of Faith in the Orient, by a Team of Dominican Fathers. Mass of Resurrection will take place on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at 11 a.m at Mt. Thabor Monastery 1295 Bald Eagle Lake Road, Ortonville with burial following on the grounds of Mt. Thabor.
