Skater performs in annual ice show

Despite change of coaches, new choreography requirements, and family stress, Clarkston ice skater Kate Manzagol earned a feature performance at the Onyx Suburban Skating Academy’s 10th annual ice show in Rochester, May 1-2.
“I love Motown music,? said Manzagol, who skated to Motown’s ‘Baby Love/Stop in the Name of Love.? ‘I was exposed to Motown style music through Christina Aguilera’s ‘Back to Basics? CD. Today’s music, instrumentally, is plastic. It doesn’t touch on those deep emotions and really grab you.?
The show’s theme, Detroit Rocks, was particularly touching to her and her family. Due to the downturn in the economy, her father was unemployed for nearly eight last year months when he was let go from his position as a proposal engineer in Auburn Hills. But she was excited to skate in the show, wearing her blue, metallic costume which she described as flashy and vibrant.
‘It’s a good theme to bring people together,? she said.
“There is a feeling of recovery and resurrection in the area and that is always something to celebrate,? said her coach, Heather Hayward.
