Both the Holly/Oxford Boys? and Girls? ski teams had strong showings last week in their first competition of the season down the slopes.
On Wednesday the boys? defeated Flint Powers 17-19 in a nail-biting slalom race. ‘The top four scorers for the team were Keith Cotaling (first), Max Ford (third), Luke Harrington (sixth) and Ben Varner (seventh).
This gave Oxford/Holly a two-point margin as they headed into the giant slalom on Thursday.
The boys also defeated Powers 14-22 in the giant slalom and achieved an overall 31-41 win between the two events.
Keith Cotaling, Max Ford, Luke Harrington, and Ben Varner were the top scorers on the team this week as they were able to out-pace the Powers skiers to clinch the first victory of the season!
‘Nick Allen and Dan DeFraine skied well too as they were able to knock down a couple Powers skiers that could have scored higher against us,? said Head Coach Seth Thompson. ‘I was very proud of the performance the whole boys? squad put together.?
On the girls? side, they had a very tough night against Powers in their first meeting on the slalom. With two runs to each racer’s name, the 12 total racers from both teams managed to end Wednesday tied 18-18.
‘Although our girls tied, it was still a great night of racing,? Thompson said. ‘Emma Ford, Sophi Que, Olivia Upham and Danielle Sink scored our points for us on Wednesday. They all skied very well and very fast. Powers just proved to be a great team.?
Heading into the giant slalom on Thursday tied, the girls knew they had to bring everything in order to get the win. They did just that as they were able to get a near perfect score Thursday evening ending with only 13 points and winning the overall race 31-41. Ford, Que, Sink and Upham were the scorers for the team.
‘I saw great skiing out of all of my girls this week and I saw an even greater mental game as they knew they had work to do but were able to put Wednesday night behind them and left it all on the hill Thursday night.?
Both the boys and the girls will race Grand Blanc tonight (Wednesday) in the slalom and tomorrow night in the giant slalom at Mount Holly Ski Resort.
