SCAMP supporters from across Clarkston and beyond turned out last week as the organization held its annual Recognition Night.
‘We were very pleased with the way the night turned out,? said Donna Clancy, executive director of the SCAMP funding corporation. ‘The event has been happening forever and ever, but with the economy the way it is, we considered not doing it this year.?
However, she said, a large number of sponsors stepped up and covered virtually all the evening’s expenses.
‘Even though times are tough, people keep saying some things are worth saving,? Clancy said. ‘SCAMP is one of them.?
SCAMP is a non-profit six-week summer offering young people with special needs an opportunity to make music and art, play games, practice motor skills, swim, fish and go on field trips.
It’s an experience, say SCAMP facilitators, the children would not otherwise have.
More than a dozen groups and individuals were acknowledged at last week’s dinner for ongoing support of SCAMP, including Deer Lake Athletic Club owner Forrest Milzow, who donated use of the facility’s banquet center for the evening.
Special recognition was given to the Clarkston Rotary, and Judy Hoddinott; Dr. Charles Munk took home the Bob Brumback award for his support of SCAMP.
Brumback worked as one of SCAMP’s original founders and remains committed to the organization.
His wife, Pat Brumback, gave attendees a snapshot view of SCAMP’s influence on the community since its inception in 1976.
‘In some different places it may be difficult to have a job in a grocery store or have a job anywhere if you have a disability,? she said. ‘Not so here. In some places it may be difficult to have a circle of friends, or people who take you to the Big Boy, or just people who are friendly to you, or even know your name when you’re in the high school. Not so here.?
Years of SCAMP’supported by the community and the inclusion philosophy in Clarkston schools’make a difference, she pointed out.
‘There’s something fundamentally different about the acceptance and what goes on in Clarkston,? Brumback said. ‘And for that I think we can be so proud and so thankful.?
