Stedman verbally agrees to attend Northwestern

Savannah Stedman will be taking her basketball talents to the Big Ten Conference next season.
Prior to the Brandon varsity girls? basketball team’s Oct. 10 game against Holly, Brandon coach Bryan Ray said that Stedman, a 6?2? Brandon senior, has verbally agreed to a scholarship with the Northwestern University women’s basketball program in Evanston, Ill. for the 2007-08 school year.
Julie Dunn, women’s basketball media contact at Northwestern, said the school cannot comment on the matter since Stedman has not signed an official letter of intent with the school.
Stedman, a four-year player on the Brandon varsity, has led the Blackhawks to an 8-3 overall record and of press time, including a 7-2 record in the Flint Metro League. The Blackhawks defeated Holly 54-24 in their Oct. 10 game.
Last year, Stedman won the team’s Most Valuable Player award and made first team All-League. She is also a member of the Blackhawks? varsity volleyball and girls? track teams.
Sher Stedman, Savannah’s mom, said her daughter was considering several schools for basketball, including Northwood University, Kent State University, Central Michigan University, the University of Detroit Mercy and Saginaw Valley State University.
However, she said Savannah, who plans to major in business at NU, was swayed by the Wildcats? degree program.
Northwestern, which is located on Lake Michigan, north of Chicago, will enter the 2006-07 season looking to turn things around after going 6-22 in 2005-06 and 5-25 in 2004-05. Northwestern is coached by Beth Combs, in her third year with the program.
