Taylor Daugherty, daughter of Steven Daugherty and Theresa Daugherty of Clarkston and graduate of Clarkston High School, has completed the season with the Albion College women’s basketball team. She will receive a certificate designating her first-year award when the team meets in April for its award banquet.
Playing in 26 games, Daugherty averaged 1.5 points and 2.2 rebounds. She scored in double figures by collecting 12 points in Albion’s Feb. 18 victory over Alma Collgee.

Students are chosen annually for the Gerstacker Institute through a highly selective process based on academic achievement and demonstrated leadership abilities. Gerstacker members must complete degree requirements in economics and management, along with courses in ethics, writing, speaking and management, and fulfill at least two internships in a wide range of business settings.

Knapper, a 2008 graduate of Calvin College, served the chief executive from May until early August. He was one of 100 students chosen nationwide to participate in the highly competitive program.
‘This was a natural fit for a communications and political science major,? Knapper said. ‘It was one big learning experience.?
The highlight of the summer came in late July when he and the other interns gathered in the East Room to meet with the commander-in-chief. For an hour, President George W. Bush interacted with the volunteers.
“It was a very moving experience to get his perspective on what’s going on in the world,” Knapper said. “The president was quite generous with the time he gave us and he provided very complete answers to our questions.”
Knapper studies law at Pepperdine University.

Colleen E. Mead of Clarkston earned the Presidential Scholar in Accountancy award, the highest honor Western Michigan University can bestow to an undergraduate.
Mead, who expects to graduate in June, is a member of the Lee Honors College. She is majoring in accountancy and minoring in general business.
Mead came to WMU on a Medallion Scholarship, and also received a full athletic scholarship to play tennis.
Following graduation, she plans to remain at WMU for a fifth year to obtain her master’s degree in accountancy. She plans to take the Certified Public Accountant examination and start working full time in 2009.
She has interned in the Chicago offices of two accounting firms, Crowe Chizek and Ernst & Young. Both internships were in auditing.
She completed last fall her honors college thesis, “Improving Financial Literacy Among College Students.”
Mead has a 4.0 grade point average and was a member of the 2006 WMU team that won the ‘xACT competition,? an accounting contest put on by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
She was a member of the Student Leadership Advisory Board and the honors college as a senator for the Western Student Association.
Mead served as president and community service chair of Beta Alpha Psi, WMU’s honorary accounting organization. She also is active in Strides for Breast Cancer and tutors accounting students.

C. Lane Fortinberry III, son of Chuck and Dana Fortinberry of Clarkston, served as captain of Team Jeep at the 44th Annual Northwood University International Auto Show in Midland, Michigan. North America’s largest outdoor auto show and one of the largest outdoor shows in the world, NUIAS is entirely planned and presented by Northwood students. This year’s show, presented September 28 – 30, featured over 550 vehicles from every major manufacturer and many after-market and specialty suppliers, including the first-ever public display of the vehicles from the movie Transformers. Fortinberry, a 2004 graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory School, is a senior at Northwood majoring in Automotive Marketing. This is his fourth year as a member of the NUIAS committee, having served in previous years as captain of both Team Dodge and Team Chrysler. Fortinberry will graduate in May 2008.

Andrew Breen, 2003 graduate of Clarkston High School, is the top kicker in the Great Lakes Football Conference.
A senior at Tiffin University in Ohio, Breen scored 12 points in Tiffin University’s 60 – 6 win over Gannon on Sept. 29.
He leads the league in extra points, 19 of 20, and is tied for first in field goals, with six. His longest field goal is 41 yards. His 37 total points is eight more than the second place kicker.
Tiffin is 4 and 1 on the season and travels to Wesleyan Kentucky for their next game.

‘Kamp Kettering introduces young women to math, science and engineering,? said Virginia Hill, coordinator of Kamp Kettering. ‘They learn hands on what it’s like to be in that type of career. Current Kettering students mentor the students enrolled in Kamp Kettering.?
Created in 1994, Kamp Kettering is a week-long program of exploration in fuel cells, the science of bridge building and musical instruments, and the chemistry of making your own hand cream and soap.
Kettering faculty and staff members also teach students how to write a computer program, complete an engineering project and carry out various lab experiments in chemistry and physics.
Students must complete an essay, submit two letters of recommendation and have earned a minimum 3.0 grade point average to enroll in the select program.

Clarkston students Andrea Lawrence and Kevin Stone participated in the Sustainable Energy Pre-College Program at Kettering University in Flint.
Students in grades 9-12 attended the hands-on sessions and learned about sustainable energy, including solar, wind, hydro-electric and fuel cells. Students were also introduced to careers in the fields of sustainable energy, bio fuels, electrochemical energy and geo-hydro energy.
Activities included assembling plastic cars powered by hydrogen and oxygen and learning about new technologies, like hybrid vehicles and fuel cells.

Michelle Marmon has been awarded Western Michigan University’s Outstanding New Dance Major scholarship.
Marmon is an honor roll student at Clarkston High School, graduating this spring. She has committed to attending Western Michigan as a dance major.
She auditioned for entry in the dance department and scholarship in October. She was scored in ballet, jazz, and modern technique, wrote an impromptu essay, provided letters of recommendation, and was interviewed by dance faculty. About 120 dancers auditioned for about 25 openings.
Marmon began dancing when she was 3 years old, and a part of a preprofessional performance troupe at Terri Newman’s Dance Shoppe in Waterford. In July, she placed second out of more than 250 soloists from around the country and Canada at the Dance Masters of America Grand National Championships in Las Vegas.
She is the daughter of Patti and Paul Marmon of Independence Township.

The winners are Lauren Rodewald, seventh grade, Matthew Lawson, ninth grade, Jenna Harkness, seventh grade, and Monique Zentner, sixth grade. Each student will receive $500 to attend Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.
‘The main reason for having this program is to encourage enthusiasm for music in the Clarkston area,? said Ann Dutton, chairman of the Optimists? Music Scholarship Committee.
‘The applications were very impressive and winners were chosen keeping our purpose in mind. As in past years, the winners were chosen from the Middle and Junior High schools. Bryan Yestrepsky received a Richard K. Vitek Chemistry Scholarship during Albion College’s annual Honors Convocation held late last month.
The Albion College faculty and administration choose recipients for these awards from among the most exemplary students in all academic departments.
Yestrepsky, a senior majoring in chemistry, is the son of Daniel Yestrepsky and Diane Yestrepsky of Clarkston and a graduate of Notre Dame Prep.

Nate Knapper of Clarkston was recently honored with the Congressman Paul Henry Integrity Award, the Daniel Rosenthal Legislative Intern Award and the Frank M. Fitzgerald Public Service Award.
‘It was a surprise and an honor at the same time,? said Knapper, a junior at Calvin College.
‘You work hard, and sometimes you see the benefits, and sometimes it’s not as clear to you. But this time it certainly has been clear, and the Lord has blessed,? said Knapper, an Oakland Christian grad.
He is considering law school following his 2008 graduation.
‘I have sort of a general interest in entering the intelligence community: FBI, CIA, Homeland Security, something like that,? he said.

Megan Anderson and Jamie Gove, both of Clarkston, presented projects at Albion College’s recent Elkin R. Isaac Research Symposium
Anderson presented the research project ‘Effects of Dentate Gyrus and Ca1 Lesions on Trace Appetitive Conditioning in Rats.? She also received the David K. and Patricia B. Hogberg Award for Research Excellence in Psychology and the Ned S. Garvin Award in Neuroscience at the college’s annual Honors Convocation, held with the symposium. She was also elected to the Albion College chapter of Sigma XI, a national honorary society for students who have demonstrated outstanding scientific research potential.
Anderson is a senior majoring in psychology, and minoring in cell and molecular biology, with a concentration in neuroscience. She is the daughter of Bill Anderson of Pontiac and DeLynn Anderson of Clarkston and a graduate of Clarkston High School.
Gove presented the research project ‘Four- and Five-Year Olds? Perceptions on Physical Activity and Nutrition.? She is a senior majoring in English education and physical education, and is completing the K-12 education program. She is the daughter of Michael and Kathy Gove of Clarkston and a graduate of Clarkston High School.

Luke Thompson, Springfield Christian Academy, Clarkston, and Zachary Weiss, Clarkston High School, were awarded Congressional Medal of Merit Honors May 4 by U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers.
Each student demonstrated exemplary citizenship and academic excellence throughout their high school careers.
‘An outstanding sense of service to their peers, education, and community is the hallmark of these young adults,? Rogers said. ‘It is a privilege to recognize their achievements and to honor them with the Congressional Medal of Merit.?

Sashabaw Middle School Seventh Grade Silver Band and the Seventh Grade Red Band both earned 2nd Division Ratings at State Festival.
Silver Band earned straight 2nd Division ratings on the concert stage and sightreading. Red Band earned two 2nd Division ratings and a 1st Division rating on stage, and a 1st Division in sightreading. All participating students received medals.
Nine Clarkston Community Schools bands performed at the state level. These bands included almost 500 students grades 7-12, the highest of any in Michigan.

Brad Bailey of Clarkston recently finished his Ph.D. in chemistry on the synthesis and characterization of metal-ligand multiple bonds.
He will join recent Nobel laureate Richard Schrock at MIT as a postdoctoral researcher.
His honors include the GAANN fellowship, William H. Nebergall Memorial Award, Lubrizol Fellowship, and Felix Haurowitz Award.
He has presented in Anaheim, Washington D.C., and University of Notre Dame, and has written for 16 publications.
Bailey graduated Clarkston High School in 1998 and University of Michigan in 2002. He is the son of Pat and Doug Bailey of Clarkston. He has three older brothers, Dan, Chris, and Adam.

Maureen Kuhta of Clarkston was named to the DePaul University Dean’s List for the 2006 fall term.
Kuhta is pursuing a Biological Sciences majoy.

The Clarkston High School Forensics Speech Team won first place honors in the Small Teams division at the Frankenmuth tournament Feb. 24.
This is the 2nd year in a row that Clarkston has earned first place.
Senior Heidi Bretz earned a trophy with her second-place finish overall in Poetry – her highest placing yet.
Also, junior Marissa Ortiz finished ninth overall in Prose out of 30 other
contestants.
Junior Rob Miller competed in his first Forensics tournament for Oratory and even earned a third place in one of his rounds.

Sickman is majoring in Psychology and attained a 4.0 for the fall semester. She is also a member of the Cross Country and Track teams.

This is her second year cheering for UM, where she is a pre-med student.

Clarkston High School graduates Gregory Davis, Zachary McDonald and Ian Sabbag have been accepted this fall into the Prentiss M. Brown Honors Institute at Albion College.
Davis, a first-year student at Albion, is the son of Jeffrey Davis and Susan Davis of Clarkston. McDonald, also a first-year student, is the son of Robert McDonald and Donna McDonald of Clarkstonl. Sabbag, a first year as well, is the son of Paul Sabbag and Kim Voog-Sabbag of Clarkston.
Honors students are required to enroll in four ‘Great Issues? seminars in humanities, science, social science, and fine arts. In addition to the seminars, they must graduate with a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and produce an Honors thesis.

Clarkston High School graduates Thomas Beattie, Zachary McDonald, and Ian Sabbag, all first-year students at Albion College, have been accepted into Albion’s Carl A. Gerstacker Liberal Arts Institute for Professional Management.
Beattie is the son of Thomas Beattie and Amy Beattie of Clarkston. McDonald’s parents are Robert McDonald and Donna McDonald of Clarkston, and Sabbag’s are Paul Sabbag and Kim Voog-Sabbag of Clarkston.
Gerstacker students must complete degree requirements in economics and management, along with courses in ethics, writing, speaking and management, and fulfill at least two internships in a wide range of business settings.

Kelly Ann Blundy, Clarkston High School graduate, received her doctorate in chiropractic on Aug. 19 from Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, Mo.
Blundy also holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology. She is an alumnus of Chu Rho Sigma Fraternity as a Sister in the Bond at Logan College.
She received a health center Certificate of Appreciation and a Certificate of Merit. She plans to practice in New York City.

Michael Auchter of Clarkston has been named to the dean? slist for the spring quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Auchter, the son of Mark and Elaine Auchter, is majoring in computer engineering.

Nathaniel Knapper, of Clarkston, was awarded an $1,800 scholarship for the 2006-07 year by the Communications Arts and Sciences Department at Calvin College.
Knapper received one of two Ann Janssen Noteboom Scholarships. The award honors junior and senior communications majors who show outstanding promise.
Knapper recently completed a year as part of the McGregor Scholarship Group at the college in Grand Rapids. He was one of 40 students selected to participate in various educational activities and special tours of historic sites.
The 20-year-old Oakland Christian High School graduate interned during the 2005 summer at the Michigan Capitol with Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema. This summer, he is serving as a legislative staffer for Rep. Fulton Sheen, R-Plainwell, who chairs the House Tax Policy Committee.
Knapper, who graduated as valedictorian, is the son of Dan and Annette Knapper of Clarkston.

The $5,000 scholarship is awarded to students who have exhibited academic excellence during their high school years. The scholarship is renewable if criteria are met.
Arkwright will graduate from Clarkston High School this spring and is planning to work on a business degree at Northwood.
He is the son of Stephen and Jennifer Arkwright, of Clarkston.
