Students claim victory in ‘Battle of the Books’

When it comes to literacy and comprehension, it appears Leonard Elementary reigns supreme in the Oxford school district.
The school took first, second and third in the annual ‘Battle of the Books? competition held April 14 in the Oxford High School Performing Arts Center.
Twenty-nine teams of fourth-graders, a total of 144 students, from across the school district spent the evening answers questions about the seven different books they read for the competition.
After an intense battle that included four tie-breaking questions, Leonard’s Reading Rabbits were declared the winners.
The team consisted of Mario Scribner, Erin Reed, Diamond Smith and Bailey Hornung. They were advised by parent Lisa Scribner and assisted by Katie Reed, an eighth-grader at Oxford Middle School.
Leonard’s Reading Raiders earned second place. Ben McBride, Seven Haslinger, Braun Mayette and Dryden Calcaterra were the competitors and Gery McBride was the advisor.
Third place was secured by the Reading Stars, which consisted of Katherine Sanchez, Alyssa Pace, Megan Darocha, Jade Schramm and Katie Comparioni. They were advised by Eudoria Darocha and Cheryl Pace.
The sixth-graders held their Battle of the Books two days later in the PAC.
Nine teams competed and after a series of tough questions, the Brain Stormers were declared the victors.
Lizzy Burr, Emilee Knop, Maddie Koster, Ali Piezynski, Gabby Barber and Kylie Beach are the new sixth-grade champions.
The Battle of the Books program is a collaborative effort between the school district and the Oxford Public Library.
