Students help before heading out for summer

Springfield Plains Elementary wrapped up their school year, Friday, with a donation to Lighthouse Emergency Services in Independence Township.
During the week of May 19, students and staff donated spare change, before school and during lunch. The school raised $252.94, which was presented to Lighthouse North at the All School meeting, Friday, June 13, the last day of school.
Fifth-grader David Posawatz developed the idea. He participated in a similar fundraiser at his church, St. Daniels, during Lent.
He talked to Principal K.C. Leh and his teacher, Gloria Lacy, and worked with the school Student Council. They sent letters home to students explaining the plan, and rallied classmates around the idea.
Fifth-grader Andrew Hudson volunteered to help collect donations. Student Council Treasurer Josh Smith and fellow fifth-grader Joe DeFinis volunteered to count the money collected.
