Oxford High School held its Brake Service Competition Jan. 15 in the school’s auto shop.
Thirty-two students, grouped in 16 teams of two, went through various stations and were timed on how quickly they could dissasemble and correctly reassemble a drum brake unit.
According to Auto Service Instructor Daniel Balsley, the students had to service two different vehicles in order to be considered for prizes, with their best time from each vehicle added together for their team score.
‘The competition was created to motivate students to learn how to correctly service brakes,? he said.
Taking first place were Kory Woody and Rob Heldt with a combined time between two vehicles of 3 minutes and 48 seconds.
Second place was Kyle Sachs and Matt Oxlade with a time of 4:06. They were only 18 seconds behind the first-place finishers.
Third place was Jimmy Walker and Chad Angeli at 4:51. They were only 45 seconds behind second place.
Supporting sponsors this year were Oxford Bank, Oxford Rotary Club, Oxford McDonalds, Steve’s Oxford Automotive, Wright Tool Company, Just Trucks and OHS.
