Alayna Zalac’s 1970s style Pulte Home in the Keatington Subdivision of Orion Township would not have supported her new lifestyle, until Beth Shifferd, Team Alayna, and countless volunteers pulled the community together for a home-makeover, Lake Orion style.
Alayna returned home from CS Mott’s Children’s Hospital a couple months ago after receiving extensive treatment for a rare type of leukemia. She picked out the lavender color of her new, first floor room, and hadn’t seen her new room, built from the ground up, until Friday, April 4.
Building officials, electricians, and contractors came out for the reveal, along with Alayna’s closest middle school friends from Waldon Middle School and township officials for the party.
‘It’s incredible that it came together,? Shifferd said, one of the spear-heads of the project, which would have cost close to $60,000 had the materials, time and effort not been completely donated. ‘When Terry (Alayna’s mom) asked me to head this project in September, 2013, I got that pit in my stomach of ‘how.??
Alayna’s new room is complete with a roll-in shower, nursing station, huge TV, surround sound system, touch faucets, and will include an overhead tract for lifting and a patio with an accessible wrap-around-ramp once spring is here to stay.
Shifferd would like to thank all of the following businesses, contractors and handy-men who made Alayna’s dream room possible: Innovative Construction Systems, Alside Windows, Boston Electric, Express Plumbing, Mans Lumber, Smede & Sons Steel, Elite Poured Walls, Curtis Excavating, Weather Shield, Rockport Contracting, Virginia Tile, GNE Paint, LaSalle Sales, Romano Granite & Tile, Randazzo Heating & Cooling, Oxford Overhead Door, Faith Works of Michigan, American Craftsman Home, Advanced Cabinetry, Riemer Flooring, ASN Alarm, Metro Sanitation, Orion Stone, MAC Painting, Excel Builders, Jeff Smith, JCHC Cementand MGA Home Services INC.
Shifferd has already been asked to spearhead another home makeover for a local boy called Levi’s Project, and is looking for more volunteers on top of the volunteers for Team Alayna, who have already volunteered their services for the next project.
