Thefts uncivilized sign of the times

Dear Editor:
My husband and I had our presidential political signs stolen again as soon as we put them out. We own land up to and along Seymour Lake Road and thus put our political signs there. Yet, this thievery has happened at every presidential election since we moved to this area in 1992. We never had this happen before we moved to Brandon Township. This year we replaced the sign, only to find it knocked down almost every night this week. The only reason it has not been stolen again, I believe, is because we covered all the edges and supports in grease which the thieves don’t like on their hands or in their vehicles.
Why should we have to go to such an extent just to show support for a candidate? Don’t people in this area believe in the Constitution’s guarantee of free speech? That is what putting up any political sign is – free speech. My husband and I may disagree with our neighbors?? political views at times, but we respect their right to have that opinion and to express it with a sign on their own property. Why can’t our opinions also be respected?
No one should have to put up with this illegal and uncivilized behavior, no matter what party they support, Republican, Democrat, Green, Libertarian or other. It happened in the primaries, as reported in some newspapers, and now it is happening again. Let’s show respect for the law and the Constitution and respect others? opinions, even when we disagree. That is a value this country was founded upon and one that everyone should hold dear regardless of their political affiliation or lack thereof.
