Thompson still optimistic Brandon golfers can succeed

Despite a subpar Flint Metro League record this season, Coach Wayne Thompson said the Brandon boys golf team still has a chance to achieve some good things this season.
‘We’re hoping for some improvement,? he said.
The Blackhawks concluded their regular season dual meet schedule with a 157-170 loss to visiting Swartz Creek Monday, Sept. 25 at Goodrich Country Club, 10080 Hegel Road, Goodrich.
Robert Thompson led the Blackhawks with a round of 39, the first time he has led the team this season. Ryan Bilkos followed with a round of 40, followed by Brian Jordan at 44 and Mike Rogers at 47.
The Blackhawks concluded dual meet action with a record of 1-7, with their lone win coming against Oxford.
The team has a busy schedule in the upcoming week. The Blackhawks were scheduled to participate in the Oakland County meet Friday, Sept. 29, and are also scheduled to compete in the upcoming postseason Flint Metro League meet Monday, Oct. 2 at Sugarbush Golf Course in Davison.
Brandon is hoping for a better team showing than at the preseason Flint Metro meet Aug. 21, which also took place at Sugarbush. The Blackhawks finished sixth out of nine teams.
The Blackhawks finished with a team score of 351, well behind first-place Holly, which finished at 333. Swartz Creek and Fenton each finished next at 336, but the Panthers won second place on a tiebreaker.
Bilkos led the Blackhawks at that tournament, placing fourth among all individual golfers with a round of 81. Jordan also placed in the top 10, finishing tied for 10th at 84.
Wayne Thompson said he hopes the Blackhawks can use those two tournaments to build confidence heading into Division 2 district action, which is scheduled to start Thursday, Oct. 5.
‘I still believe this team potentially has the ability to get out of districts,? he said. ‘If we can get four guys to shoot good scores, we can advance to regionals.?
