Those wishing to treat-or-treat in the Village of Oxford may do so this year from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Halloween night.
Council last week voted 4-1 to confirm this year’s candy collecting time, which was extended by 30 minutes last year.
However, Councilman Tony Albensi was not pleased with what he viewed as government’s Big Brother-esque role in this matter.
‘I don’t know if it’s our place to tell people when their kids can go trick-or-treating,? he said. ‘I think people are responsible enough to understand and know what’s best for their own kids.?
Albensi said if people passing out candy happen to run out or simply wish to only do it for a set amount of time, they can always shut their porch lights off. He’d prefer that to regulating the time kids can be out.
‘Who are we to tell people what’s best for the kids?? he added. ‘To me, this is the strong-arm of government telling its residents what’s best for them.?
Although Oxford Township doesn’t formally adopt trick-or-treating hours, it’s generally accepted that whatever time is adopted in the village extends to the township as well.
