Oxford voters said ‘yes? to two out of four tax proposals for the Oxford Fire Department in yesterday’s election.
A five-year, 1.5-mill tax proposal for fire and EMS operations passed 1,878 to 1,402.
A five-year, 1-mill tax to establish and maintain local Advanced Life Support services was approved 1,839 to 1,444.
On the flip side, two bond proposals for the fire department were defeated.
A $375,000 bond proposal to purchase a new pumper truck was narrowly defeated by only 27 votes. Voters rejected it 1,652 to 1,625.
A $595,000 bond proposal to construct an approximately 4,000-square-foot living space at the main station on N. Washington Street was overwhelmingly defeated. Voters rejected it 2,038 to 1,238.
Despite the mixed results, Fire Chief Jack LeRoy said he’s ‘very pleased? with the election’s outcome, but the ‘real celebration? won’t begin until the first ALS unit rolls out of the station.
‘That’s when we’ll know we’ve accomplished something,? he said.
LeRoy added, ‘I wish they all would have passed, but the people have spoken and we’re going to continue to give them the best service we can with what we’ve got. That’s what we’ve always done.?
Of the township’s 13,041 registered voters, 3,367 (or 25.82 percent) cast a ballot in yesterday’s election.
