The Lake Orion varsity competitive cheer team continued a bit of its acrobatic mastery on Saturday by winning the state district championship for the third consecutive year.
Coach Nicole Hills? Dragons now move to the regionals on Saturday at Novi. A good showing there and it’s on to the state championship on March 6.
There is no doubt that Lake Orion is one of the top competitive cheer teams in the state and have a solid chance to showcase their talents in the state championships.
Hills was pleased with the Dragon’s performance on Saturday, especially in the third and final round of the event. Competitive cheer is comprised of three rounds, with the final round being the more difficult one.
‘We are very happy with the outcome. It was the best score of the year in round three. In round one and two there were a couple of small errors but our round three was our best so far this year. They really brought it home,? Hills said.
Even with the minor errors in the first two rounds, the Dragons held slight leads over Clarkston, Grand Blanc and Oxford entering the final round. Clarkston, Grand Blanc and Oxford also advanced to regional competition.
The third district crown in as many years was special, Hills said.
‘It’s great to have three in a row. We are really proud.?
Hills said that the girls are eager to face the challenges in the regionals.
Several of the teams in the Novi regionals, such as East Kentwood, Grandville, Holland West Ottawa and Jenison, are from the west side of Michigan, which offers some good challenges.
Grandville was the state runner-up last year in Division 1, which was won by Southgate Anderson for the third consecutive year.
