Village, contractor at odds over costs

In the midst of ongoing struggles concerning the pathway on Hegel Road, a new set of contractor troubles have arisen for the village council’this time concerning the municipal complex.
The council entered into executive session during Monday’s meeting, apparently to discuss a letter requesting more money for work done on the Gordon H. Bachmann Department of Public Works building,10242 Hegel Road.
Construction on the $1 million, 4,400 square foot DPW and Goodrich administrative offices on three acres began in spring, 2004. Graham Construction of Saginaw were hired as contractors for the project.
‘The company felt that they deserved some additional funds because of some soil conditions,? said council president Ed York.
A representative from Graham Construction could not be reached for comment.
York said a lawyer representing the company sent a letter demanding extra money for work done on the complex.
After entering into closed session to discuss the matter, the village meeting reopened with York explaining the situation and instructing village attorney Tom McKenny to draft a letter rejecting those demands.
‘Based on information we’ve been provided, they’re not entitled to another cent,? said York. ‘We feel it was not justified under the contract. (Graham Construction) didn’t show us any reason to do this. They just kind of arbitrarily decided they need more money.?
York said the village stills owes approximately $5,000 to Graham Construction, for what he described as small issues that still needed to be addressed in the completion of the complex.
